NEW YORK, NY Why Walker Buehler struggled throughout the regular season after making a return from Tommy John’s surgery was a mystery that many baseball fans could hardly solve, but on Wednesday night, he looked as if it were 2019 all over again.

The 30-year-old Buehler, previously projected as the de facto top pitcher of this pitching staff in Los Angeles, pitched a horrible 5.38 earned run average (ERA) in 16 starts throughout the season, which is a career high for Buehler since he began professional baseball.

By virtue of being called up due to injuries to other arms in the dodgers rotation, including Kerhsaw, he was named a starter for the games almost by force.

New York, NY Pitcher Walker Buehler #21 of the Los Angeles Dodgers warms up prior to the game during Game 3 of the NLCS presented by loanDepot Attending: LI Dodgers vs New York Mets at Citi Field on Wednesday, October 16, 2024, in New York.

His first postseason start should be compared to a spelunking expedition, and the same can be said about the regular season: it was not his best work. He gave up six earned runs over five innings to the San Diego Padres in what was later called his last game for the season.

Yet, L.A. won that series in five games, and to that end, the Dodgers named Buehler the starter for Game 3 of the NLCS.

He did not, however, guarantee that he would be suitable for pitch count and innings. He struck out Francisco Lindor with the bases loaded in the second inning and even managed to pitch four scoreless innings, for which he threw 90 pitches.

Buehler’s present condition has many surprised because from where he has been this entire season, manager Dave Roberts has praised the turnaround he has seen in Buehler since as recent as last week.

His adversaries received an overwhelming five hits and six earned runs across five innings, and Buehler’s first postseason star can be better stooped to the regular season than exemplary. This was meant to happen in the last game of the season for him against the San Diego Padres.

But LA took that series in five games, and Buehler was named the Game 3 starter of the NLCS.

In terms of pitch count and innings, he did not let down. He struck out Francisco Lindor in the second inning with the bases loaded and got through four innings of ball without allowing a run, albeit on 90 pitches.

Taking himself from where he’s been throughout this entire season, and even just a week ago, manager Dave Roberts was rather impressed with Buehler’s recovery.

Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Walker Buehler (21) responds after an out against the New York Mets in the second inning during game three of the NLCS for the 2024 MLB end of the season games at Citi Field.

Dave Roberts of the Dodgers still enjoys "the satisfaction of beating that team across town."

“He’s somewhat had to re-engineer himself, and I say that in a good way. Clearly, this season was quite shaky looking to make a comeback from one hell of a surgery,” Roberts said after Game 3 of the NLCS against the New York Mets, which the Dodgers won 8-0.

“Other than that, it’s easy to ride when the wind is at your back... but when it’s encountering, you lose faith, then adjust back and still hold on. There are some for me that I don’t think he ever had to go through. If you look at June or July, I do not believe anybody would have pictured him here right now, and that’s kudos to Walker.”

‘Walk, would not’ Walker himself disallowed the thought that after disgracing himself and his team against the Padres, he made even more effort. “Pressure is a privilege”, he said.

‘In my opinion,’ pressure does not describe the situation adequately. Such an overused expression... A few times, I have had to do it. These contests these days sure excite me; they do not intimidate like before, when I was quite younger, he elaborated.

Buehler is currently in line to pitch a possible Game 7, and despite the fact that he might want to go longer than four innings, he definitely has a lot better inclination right now than he did after his last excursion.

Besides, Roberts unquestionably will not generally disapprove of composing his name on that setup card in the event that he wants to a couple of days from now.
